Coming off the heels of a big week for The University of Scranton women's basketball team, junior forward Sofia Recupero (Whitestone, N.Y./Saint Francis Prep ) was named the Landmark Conference's Athlete of the Week for the period ending Dec. 16, 2018 on Monday afternoon.
For Recupero, this marks the first time in her career that she has earned Landmark Athlete of the Week honors, as well.
On the week, Recupero did a little bit of everything for the Lady Royals, as Scranton improved to 9-0 on the season with home victories over York (89-46), No. 22 Ithaca (65-53), and Capital (62-52). With the victories, Scranton extended their regular season non-conference winning streak to 41 games, as well.
Recupero hit double figures in all three triumphs in the scoring column for Scranton, kicking the week off on Monday with a 13 point, seven rebound effort against York. Up against a strong Ithaca team on Saturday to open the Hilton Scranton Poinsettia Classic, Recupero put together a career game, scoring 22 points (and pulling down seven rebounds) to lead Scranton to the 12-point win.
Recupero capped the week off by scoring 10 points on Sunday against Capital, and for her efforts, was named Scranton's team MVP for the Hilton Scranton Poinsettia Classic.
For the year, Recupero has started every game but one for the Lady Royals. She is averaging 11 points and six rebounds a contest, while shooting 58.1 percent from the floor, the best mark on the team.
Recupero and the rest of the sixth-ranked University of Scranton women's basketball team returns to action Tuesday, as they travel to Gwynedd Mercy. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
