MADISON, N.J. - Junior guard Emily Sheehan (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore) scored a team-high 14 points to lead the way, as The University of Scranton women's basketball team used an 18-9 rally in the third quarter to pull away from host Drew in an eventual 56-44 win in Landmark Conference action on Wednesday night.
With the victory, the Lady Royals, who are ranked third in the D3hoops.com Top 25 and fourth in the WBCA Top 25, stayed unbeaten on the year at 18-0 overall and 7-0 in the Landmark Conference. Drew fell to 10-7 overall and 3-4 in the Landmark with the loss.
To start, things were close between the teams throughout the first half, as Scranton opened an early 14-10 lead on Drew with a minute and change left in the first quarter. Up by only a basket entering the second (14-12), the Lady Royals kept a slim lead throughout the period, eventually opening up a 27-19 edge with 2:17 to go in the first half.
That eight point lead held or the final moments of the second quarter, as Scranton entered the locker room for intermission up, 29-21.
Out of the break, the Lady Royals put away Drew for the evening, as the opened the half on a quick 7-0 run to open their biggest lead of the night at 36-21. Eventually, Scranton was able to go up 20 (44-24) on Drew with 2:35 left, a deficit that was insurmountable for the host Rangers to come back from the rest of the night.
After the dust cleared in the third quarter, Scranton held a sizeable 47-30 lead entering the final 10 minutes of regulation. There, the closest Drew came to the Lady Royals lead was just 12 points, as Scranton collected their 17th win of the year by double-digits and their 14th straight such victory overall.
Overall in the win, Sheehan led three double-digit scorers with her 14 point performance. 10 of Sheehan's points came in the first half, as she went 4-of-5 from three-point range in the victory.
Elsewhere, junior forward Makenzie Mason (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) has another strong effort, posting a double-double with 11 points and a career-best 13 rebounds. The double-double for Mason was her fifth of the year, as she's now scored in double-figures in nine straight games and 16 games overall for the year. Mason also dished out four assists in the victory, as well.
Rounding out the double-digit scorers for the Lady Royals was sophomore guard Ava Gammo (East Hanover, N.J./Hanover Park), who finished with 10 points and four rebounds.
On defense, it was another solid night for Scranton, as they held Drew to 30.6 percent shooting from the floor in the victory. The Lady Royals, who also outrebounded Drew, 39-29, held an opponent to under 50 points for the fifth straight game and for the 12th time on the season.
The University of Scranton women's basketball team returns home to the John Long Center for their first home game in two weeks on Saturday, as the Lady Royals host Elizabethtown to begin the second half of the Landmark Conference season. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
