Women’s Basketball Set to Host Landmark Conference Semifinals vs. Moravian Thursday Evening

The three-time defending Landmark Conference champion University of Scranton women's basketball team begins their defense of the conference crown on Thursday night, as the top-seeded Lady Royals take on fourth-seeded Moravian inside the John Long Center in semifinal action beginning at 7 p.m.

Fans making the trip to the Long Center are reminded that admission prices at the door will be $7 for adults and $4 for seniors and students. Anyone with a Landmark Conference institution ID gets in free of charge.

The Lady Royals, ranked ninth nationally by the WBCA and 12th by D3hoops.com, enter the tournament in familiar territory as the Landmark Conference's top seeded after finishing the regular season with a 23-2 overall mark and a 12-2 ledger in the Landmark.

Scranton, who began the year rattling off 18 straight wins, boasts a balanced offensive attack that has been led all season by junior forward Makenzie Mason (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West). Mason, who averages a team-best 13.4 points a game and 7.4 rebounds per contest, has scored in double-figures in 20 games, registering double-doubles seven times throughout the course of the season.

Shooting at a 46.5 percent clip as a team for the season (the best mark in the Landmark and seventh best in the country), Scranton has been just as strong on the defensive end all season long, also coming in seventh nationally in field goal percentage defense at 30.7 percent. The Lady Royals have allowed opponents to score an average of just 48 points a game (the fifth best mark in all of NCAA Division III), as they've held the opposition to under 50 points 16 times throughout the year.

Moravian, the Landmark's number four seed, comes into Thursday's game with a 16-9 overall mark, finishing 8-6 in conference play throughout the season. The Greyhounds have been led all season by junior forward Maddie Capuano, who is the Landmark's leading scorer entering the playoffs, averaging 20.9 points per game.

In the regular year, Scranton swept the season series with Moravian with a pair of convincing victory, first at home on Jan. 9, 71-45, then in Bethlehem on Feb. 6, 72-51. Thursday's game will mark the 13th meeting all-time between the Lady Royals and Greyhounds in a conference playoff game, with Scranton holding a 9-3 edge in the series.

The team's have also met each of the last two seasons in the Landmark semifinals, with Scranton taking both meetings inside the Long Center (67-45 in 2018 and 71-60 in 2019).

The other Landmark Conference semifinal on Thursday night pits second-seeded Elizabethtown against third-seeded Catholic at E-Town. The winners of both semifinal games will then meet for the 2018-19 Landmark championship on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. at the site of the highest remaining seed left in the tournament.
