After leading The University of Scranton women's basketball team to their fourth straight Landmark Conference championship, junior forward Sofia Recupero (Whitestone, N.Y./Saint Francis Prep) has been named the Scranton Athlete of the Week for the period ending Feb. 24.
For Recupero, this marks the second time on the season that she has been named the Scranton Athlete of the Week, as she earned the honor back on Nov. 20, 2017.
Recupero began her week with a solid game against Moravian on Thursday in the Landmark Conference semifinals, as she finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds in a dominating 84-54 win over the Greyhounds.
But, on Sunday in the Landmark title game against Elizabethtown, Recupero was outstanding, finishing with a game-high 22 points (matching a career-high) while snatching 11 rebounds to lead the Lady Royals to a convincing 68-48 win to capture the program's seventh Landmark Conference title in program history. For her efforts, Recupero was named the Landmark Championship MVP, as well.
On the year, Recupero is now averaging 10.6 points per game and 6.5 rebounds per contest, as well.
Recupero and the rest of the Lady Royals, who are now 25-2 overall on the year, clinched the Landmark Conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament, which will begin on Friday across the country.
Scranton will find out who and where they will be playing in the First Round on Monday at 2:30 p.m. Fans that want to watch the selection show can view it by clicking here.
