With the book closed on a historic 2018-19 season, The University of Scranton women's basketball program is set to begin a new era in 2019-20 under first-year head coach Nick DiPillo, as a challenging schedule awaits the Lady Royals, which was released publicly on Monday.
In all, Scranton will play 11 non-conference games to go along with their annual slate of Landmark Conference games. The schedule will also see the team travel west to Las Vegas over the holiday break, and see the Lady Royals entertain 11 opponents inside the John Long Center.
The 2019-20 campaign gets underway on Nov. 15, as Scranton heads to the Gwynedd Mercy Tip-off Tournament, opening the season against Ursinus. On Nov. 16, Scranton will either play host Gwynedd Mercy or Pitt-Bradford in the consolation or championship game of the tournament depending on Friday's result.
After staying locally for their next two games at King's (Nov. 23) and vs. Wilkes (at King's on Nov. 24), Scranton hosts their first game inside the John Long Center for the year on Nov. 26 when they take on Marywood at 7 p.m.
On Dec. 3, however, the Lady Royals go back on the road, taking on DeSales in a rematch of what was one of Scranton's closest games the entire 2018-19 season last year, in which Scranton pulled out a 63-58 win inside the Long Center. DeSales is also the first of three teams Scranton will play out-of-conference that qualified for the NCAA Tournament a season ago.
On Dec. 7, Scranton travels to Goucher to open Landmark Conference play, and after a break for final exams, returns home to host the annual Hilton Scranton Poinsettia Classic on Dec. 18 and 19. The Lady Royals will take on Elmira on the 18th, while the other match-up features Misericordia and Salisbury. Consolation and championship games are set for the 19th inside the Long Center.
After taking on defending CSAC champions Rosemont on Dec. 21 in the Long Center, the Lady Royals will pack up and head to Las Vegas to take part in the 2019 D3Hoops.com Classic, which will be held at the South Point Hotel.
To open play in Las Vegas, Scranton will take on perennial power George Fox on Dec. 28, in what will be the third and final opponent that the Lady Royals will have played that qualified for the NCAA Tournament last season. On Dec. 30, the Lady Royals finish off play in Vegas with a match-up against Saint Vincent, which will also serve as the final non-conference regular season game of the year.
After the New Year, the Royals open Landmark Conference play on Jan. 11 at home against Elizabethtown in a rematch of last year's Landmark title game that the Lady Royals won over the Blue Jays, 68-48, inside the Long Center.
The rest of the regular season sees the Lady Royals play Landmark Conference foes, highlighted by home and home contests with Elizabethtown (road game set for Feb. 1), Catholic (at home on Feb. 8) and Moravian (at home on Feb. 12). The 2019-20 regular season will end on Feb. 22, as the Lady Royals take on Goucher in the Long Center.
The Landmark Conference semifinals are set to take place on Feb. 26, and the conference championship game is slated for Feb. 29.
