GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – The No.3 University of Scranton women's basketball team (1-0) pulled away from the Ursinus Bears (0-2) in the fourth quarter en route to a 75-64 win over the Bears on Friday night at The Griffin Complex in the opening round of the Gwynedd Mercy Tip-Off Tournament.
Scranton will play the host Gwynedd Mercy Griffins on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the championship game of the Tip-Off Tournament.
The Lady Royals began the fourth quarter on a 16-7 run and captured the team's sixth straight win in a season opener dating back to the 2013-14 season.
Senior guard Emily Sheehan (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore) paced Scranton with 19 points on 7-of-15 shooting, while freshman forward Kyra Quigley (Drexel Hill, Pa./Sacred Heart Academy) added 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting and sophomore guard Emily Shurina (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) drained five threes en route to 15 points. The 19 points for Sheehan marked the second-highest total of her career after a 22 point effort versus King's on Nov. 26, 2016.
Ursinus had three players in double figures led by 19 points from Lydia Konstanzer and 18 from Aliyah Stephens.
The Bears opened an early 5-4 lead, but the Lady Royals closed the first quarter on a 7-2 run capped by a layup from Quigley to take an 11-7 lead. The two teams traded baskets for a majority of the second quarter and a layup from senior Sofia Recupero (Whitestone, N.Y./Saint Francis Prep) in the final seconds allowed Scranton to take a 31-27 lead into the locker room.
12 of Sheehan's 19 points came in the third quarter and the Dunmore, Pa., native hit a jumper to extend the lead to 49-39 with 3:15 to play, but the Bears would not go quietly and closed the quarter on a 8-2 run to cut the lead to four at 51-47. A three from Gabby Downs cut the lead to one with 9:38 to play, but the Lady Royals answered with a 16-4 run capped by a Quigley layup with 4:34 left in regulation to take a 67-54 lead at the time.
The Lady Royals shot 29-of-62 (46.8%) from the field and 9-of-26 (36%) from deep, while Ursinus was 23-of-52 (44.2%) from the floor and 7-of-15 (46.7%) from three-point range. Scranton held a slight 32-30 edge in rebounding led by eight boards from Recupero and seven from senior guard Makenzie Mason (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West).
Scranton returns to action in the championship game of the Gwynedd Mercy Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday at 2 p.m. against Gwynedd Mercy.
