MADISON, N.J. – The No. 14 University of Scranton women's basketball team (21-3, 11-2 Landmark) limited Drew to 33.3% shooting from the floor and rolled to their ninth straight win with a 59-40 victory over the Rangers (15-9, 6-7 Landmark) on Wednesday night at Baldwin Gym in Madison.
Scranton remains tied atop the Landmark Conference standings with Catholic with one regular season game remaining. The Lady Royals moved up to No. 2 in the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic regional rankings that were released on Wednesday afternoon.
Senior Makenzie Mason (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) had 14 points on 7-of-13 shooting to lead the Lady Royals, while classmate Emily Sheehan (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore) was 5-of-5 from the field en route to 13 points. Freshman Bridget Monaghan (Florham Park, N.J./Morristown-Beard) added eight points and four assists.
Erin Frederick paced Drew with 17 points in the losing effort and Joey Meyers tallied 12 points.
The Lady Royals were hot out of the gate in this one and opened the game on a 16-5 run capped by a three-pointer from sophomore Emily Shurina (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) at the 2:12 mark of the opening stanza. Sheehan sank a jumper in the final ticks to give Scranton a 20-11 lead after one. Drew trailed 26-17 with 4:08 left to play in the first half before the Lady Royals closed the half on a 10-3 run that included eight consecutive points from Mason to take a 36-20 lead into the locker room.
Scranton locked down defensively in the third quarter as they limited the Rangers to just four points in the quarter. The defensive effort allowed the visitors to extend the lead and freshman Hannah Angelini (Baldwin Place, N.Y./Somers) buried a three to extend the lead to 27 at 51-24 after three quarters of play. Drew was unable to get any closer than 19 the rest of the way as the Lady Royals preserved their ninth straight win.
Head coach Nick DiPillo's squad was 24-of-60 (40.0%) from the field and 7-of-13 (53.8%) from three point range. Scranton held Drew to the afore-mentioned 33.3% (15-of-45) shooting from the floor and a 16.7% (2-of-13) clip from beyond the arc. The Lady Royals matched their season-high by forcing 30 Drew turnovers on the night and freshman Kyra Quigley (Drexel Hill, Pa./Sacred Heart Academy Bryn Mawr) tied a season-high with four steals.
The University of Scranton women's basketball team will host Goucher to close out the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 4 p.m. Prior to the game, the team's senior class of Mason, Sheehan, Sofia Recupero (Whitestone, N.Y./Saint Francis Prep) and Lily Warhaftig (Harlem, N.Y./Poly Prep) will be honored in a ceremony.
