No. 14 Lady Royals Top Goucher on Senior Day to Clinch No. 1 Seed in Landmark Conference Tournament

SCRANTON, Pa. – The No. 14 University of Scranton women's basketball team (22-3, 12-2 Landmark) held Goucher to 25.5% shooting from the floor and 11 points in the first half en route to a 64-37 victory over the Gophers (5-20) on Senior Day at the John Long Center in Scranton on Saturday.

Scranton captured the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Landmark Conference Tournament by virtue of the win and Catholic's loss to Drew on Saturday. The Lady Royals will host Moravian in the Landmark Conference semifinals on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m.

Catholic will host Elizabethtown in the other semifinal matchup.

This also marked the 10th consecutive win for the Lady Royals.

Prior to the game, the team honored the senior class of Emily Sheehan (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore), Lily Warhaftig (Harlem, N.Y./Poly Prep), Makenzie Mason (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) and Sofia Recupero (Whitestone, N.Y./Saint Francis Prep). This senior class has compiled a record of 105-12 during their careers to date, a winning percentage of .897.

Mason had 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead Scranton offensively, while freshman Kyra Quigley (Drexel Hill, Pa./Sacred Heart Academy Bryn Mawr) added 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting and sophomore Emily Shurina (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) buried a trio of three-pointers en route to nine points.

Anise Williams paced the Gophers with a game-high 18 points in the losing effort and Alayna McFadden tallied 13 points and nine rebounds.

Scranton scored eight of the first 10 points in this one and a late jumper from freshman Hannah Angelini (Baldwin Place, N.Y./Somers) gave the hosts a 12-6 lead after one quarter. The Lady Royals held Goucher scoreless for the first seven plus minutes of the second quarter and opened the quarter on a 17-0 run capped by a three-pointer from Sheehan to open up a 29-6 lead at the 3:50 mark. Scranton took a 31-11 lead into the locker room.

Goucher opened the third quarter with a quick 5-0 spurt, but were unable to get any closer than 15 the rest of the way and the Lady Royals led 41-25 after three. Sheehan sank a three to open the scoring in the fourth quarter and kick off a 10-0 run for the hosts as a layup from Recupero made it 51-25 with 7:32 to play. Scranton cruised for the remainder of the contest en route to their 10th straight victory.

The Lady Royals shot 36.1% (22-of-61) from the field and 26.9% (7-of-26) from three-point range. As previously mentioned, the hosts held the visiting Gophers to 25.5% shooting (13-of-51) from the floor and a 2-of-17 clip (11.8%) from beyond the arc. Scranton held a 47-35 edge in the rebounding battle led by 10 rebounds from Mason and eight from Warhaftig.

The University of Scranton women's basketball team will begin their quest of a fifth consecutive Landmark Conference title on Wednesday night vs. Moravian at 7 p.m.
