WASHINGTON, D.C. – In a rematch of last spring's Landmark Conference championship game between Catholic and The University of Scranton, the host Cardinals prevailed in a tight contest on Thursday afternoon in the nation's capital, 18-15. The 22nd ranked Cardinals lift their record to 6-4 overall including a 2-0 mark in conference play while the Royals slip to 5-4 (1-1 Landmark) this spring.
Elena Gallo (East Meadow, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) scored four goals, Jill Henson (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) netted three goals and added an assist, and Kate Calabro (Seaford, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) added two goals and a pair of helpers to pace Scranton's attack in the setback.
The two teams went goal-for-goal over the first seven minutes of the contest before the Royals opened up a 6-3 advantage with 20:26 remaining in the first half following a three-goal run. Catholic used a three-goal burst of its own to level the contest before Gallo and Henson netted back-to-back tallies to give Scranton an 8-6 edge at the 12:18 mark.
The Cardinals answered by scoring four of the final goals of the opening period to hold a slim, 10-9 edge at halftime.
Catholic scored twice in the opening two minutes of the second half to extend its lead to 12-9 before the teams traded markers over the next 10 minutes with Scranton pulling to with 15-13 with 17:29 remaining.
The Cardinals netted a pair of goals separated by just 10 seconds to claim their largest lead of the game at 17-13 with 14:05 left on the clock, and the hosts were able to hold on for the victory despite seeing the Royals tally two of the final three goals of the contest.
Christine Olert (Katonah, N.Y./Somers) and Kaitlyn Murphy (Somers, N.Y./North Salem) also scored for the Royals, who received eight saves from Erin Putnam (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks South) in the loss.
Kailyn Angelo (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) collected a game-high seven draw controls, Olert added five draw controls, while Calabro collected four draw controls and tied with Warburton for the team-lead with a pair of caused turnovers apiece.
Gabby Lins (Ocean Township, N.J./Ocean Township) scooped up a team-high four ground balls for the Royals on the day while Becca Russo (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) contributed three ground balls in the loss.
Catholic held a slim, 33-30 edge in shots along with a 23-17 advantage in ground balls. The Royals won the battle for draw controls, 20-14, and were 14-of-17 of clears while the Cardinals went 17-of-18 on their clearing attempts. The hosts were also 8-of-9 on free position shots compared to a 4-of-8 effort by Scranton on eight-meter attempts.
Scranton will host Rowan on Tuesday night in another contest against a nationally ranked team. The non-conference tilt between the Royals and the 23rd ranked Profs will start at 7:00 p.m. on Fitzpatrick Field.
