The University of Scranton women's lacrosse team closed the regular season with a dominant performance on Saturday, shutting out visiting Juniata in a 20-0 victory at Fitzpatrick Field as the Royals celebrated their Senior Day in style. Scranton, now 11-6 this spring, finishes with a program-best 6-1 mark in Landmark Conference play.
The Royals enter next week's Landmark Conference playoffs at the second seed and will host third-seeded Moravian in a semifinal matchup on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m.
Prior to Saturday's game, Scranton honored the team's six seniors: Kailyn Angelo (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy), Katie Doyle (Media, Pa./Penncrest), Dana Siepietowski (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown Area), Rachel Strock (Holliston, Mass./Holliston), Morgan Windisch (Williston Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy), and Amanda Trumpore (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional).
When the pregame ceremonies concluded, the Royals wasted little time taking control of their first-ever meeting against the Eagles, who conclude their first season of competition with a 4-12 (0-7 Landmark) record. Scranton scored four goals in the opening 2:45 of the contest and built an 11-0 lead with 10:50 remaining in the first half. The Royals tacked on two more goals before halftime to hold a comfortable, 13-0 cushion at the break.
The hosts added seven more tallies in the second half to reach 20 goals for the second time this season in the victory while Scranton posted its first shutout since a 21-0 win over Moravian on March 26, 2003.
16 different Royals scored goals in the victory while Trumpore, Lauren Devlin (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West), and Erin Putnam (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks South) combined for the shutout in goal.
Elena Gallo (East Meadow, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) scored four goals to lead Scranton's attack,
Kaitlyn Murphy (Somers, N.Y./North Salem) and Jill Henson (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) netted a pair of goals and added an assist apiece while Christine Olert (Katonah, N.Y./Somers) recorded a goal and two helpers.
Angelo (2 goals), Kiera Carmody (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) (2 goals), Windisch (1 goal, 1 assist), Shannon Warburton (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) (1 goal, 1 assist), Mary Kate Horton (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) (1 goal, 1 assist), and Julia Cook (2 assists) chipped in with two points apiece.
Bridget Lalley (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge), Raegen Dunn (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township), Siobhan Warburton (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) and Erin Ahern (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) also scored goals in the win.
Angelo tied for a game-high with four draw controls, Windisch led all players with four caused turnovers, and Carmody picked up a game-high four ground balls on the afternoon.
Trumpore made two saves in the first half to pick up the win in goal while Devlin added one stop in 18:55 of action in the second half.
The Royals outshot Juniata by a 33-3 margin, held a 23-11 advantage in ground balls, and claimed an 11-9 edge in draw controls for the game.
Scranton won at Moravian, 18-9, when the two teams met during the regular season on April 7 in Bethlehem. The Greyhounds are making their first appearance in the Landmark Conference playoffs.
