The University of Scranton women' lacrosse team, currently ranked 25th in the country, remained undefeated on the season with a thrilling, 13-12 victory over Haverford in non-conference action on Saturday at Weiss Field.
Senior Christine Olert (Katonah, N.Y./Somers) scored the game-winning goal with 6:23 remaining in regulation in the Royals' defense made it stand by preventing the Fords from attempting another shot the rest of the way.
Sophomore Jill Henson (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) finished with a team-high four points on two goals and two assists for Scranton while Olert and junior Shannon Warburton (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) scored three goals apiece.
Junior goalkeeper Erin Putnam (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks South) finished the day with seven key saves to earn the victory.
The Fords (2-1) scored the first goal of Saturday's contest, but the visitor's only lead of the game only lasted just over two minutes as Scranton countered with three straight goals and seven of the next nine markers in the contest to hold a 7-3 advantage with 7:55 remaining in the first half.
Haverford netted three of the last four goals of the opening period to cut the Royals' halftime lead to 8-6.
Olert scored her second goal of the afternoon three minutes into the second half to give Scranton a three-goal edge, but three-straight markers by the Fords leveled the contest at 9-9 with 19:39 remaining in regulation.
Junior Kate Calabro (Seaford, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) put Scranton back in front just over a minute later, but Haverford forged back into a tie at the 16:38 mark.
Back-to-back goals by sophomore Raegen Dunn (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) and senior Elena Gallo (East Meadow, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) gave the Royals a 12-10 edge with 10:40 left, but the Fords countered with two-straight goals of their own to knot the score at 12-apiece with nine minutes left on the clock.
Olert completed her hat trick with an unassisted mark at the 6:23 mark with a goal that would stand as the game-winner thanks to a staunch effort by the Royals' defense.
Dunn finished with two goals and one assist, Calabro had a goal and two assists, and sophomore Bridget Lalley (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) also scored for the Royals in the win.
Junior Becca Russo (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) had an outstanding game, totaling a game-high seven draw controls, four caused turnovers, and four ground balls. Calabro, Henson, and freshman Halle Conklin (Point Lookout, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) all scooped up four groundballs in the contest with Conklin tying with Russo for a game-high with four caused turnovers for the Royals.
Scranton held a 34-24 advantage in shots for the game along with a 23-21 edge in groundballs. The Royals also forced Haverford into 25 turnovers while committing 18 turnovers of their own.
The hosts, who went 16-for-20 on clearing attempts, had a 15-11 edge in draw controls in the contest.
Scranton will return to action next Sunday, March 10, when 18th ranked Ithaca visits Weiss Field for a non-conference game starting at 1 p.m.
