SCRANTON - Junior Shannon Warburton (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) had a hat trick on the offensive end for the 20th-ranked University of Scranton women's lacrosse team on Sunday, but it wasn't enough, as visiting and 22nd ranked Ithaca pulled out a 12-10 win at Weiss Field.
With the defeat, Scranton dropped to 4-1 on the year, suffering their first loss of the 2019 season. Ithaca, meanwhile, improved to 2-1 with the hard fought win.
From the start on Sunday, it was a close affair between the squads, as Scranton scored the game's first goal four minutes in. Ithaca, however, grabbed a 3-1 lead after three straight scores, and unfortunately for the Royals, they were unable to take the lead back the rest of the contest.
But, it wasn't as if the Royals didn't fight all day, as they stayed within striking distance of the Bombers the entire first half. Scoring the final two goals of the period, Scranton went into halftime for intermission only down by one score, 6-5, to Ithaca.
To start the second half, Scranton completed a comeback from an earlier 6-3 deficit, as a goal by Warburton knotted the game up at 6-6. But, Ithaca stormed back, scoring four of the next five goals to take a 10-7 lead over Scranton with 17:50 left.
After a Royals goal cut the lead down to 10-8, the Bombers scored back-to-back goals to make it a 12-8 game with 7:57 left. Scranton, however, didn't go down without a fight, as they scored two straight goals to make it a 12-10 game, then gained possession on a draw control with 56 seconds left.
Unfortunately, Scranton was unable to get within a score in the final moments of the match, as Ithaca hung on for a 12-10 win on the road over the Royals.
Overall on the afternoon, Warburton led the offense, scoring three goals, while adding an assist. It marked the third time in five games on the year that Warburton has collected a hat trick, as well.
Elsewhere, three other players had multiple goal games for Scranton, as sophomore Jill Henson (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy), and seniors Elena Gallo (East Meadow, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) and Christine Olert (Katonah, N.Y./Somers) had two goals, each, for the Royals. Sophomore Raegen Dunn (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) recorded an assist on a goal to round out the top offensive players for Scranton.
Meanwhile, junior Kate Calabro (Seaford, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) had nine draw controls on the afternoon, and freshman Emily Schum (East Hanover, N.J./Morris Catholic) had three caused turnovers and three ground balls to lead the defense in the defeat.
Ithaca was led in the loss by Bailey Herr, who had five goals to pace the Bombers.
