No. 22 Women’s Lacrosse Pulls Away in Second Half, Rolls to 14-6 win at CNU

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Senior Elena Gallo (East Meadow, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) had a hat trick to lead the offense, as The University of Scranton women's lacrosse team scored eight straight goals to start the second half and pull away from host Christopher Newport in a 14-6 win on the road on Saturday.

With the win, the 22nd ranked Royals moved to 5-1 overall for the year, while CNU dropped to 4-4 overall with the defeat.

To start the game off, the Royals came out hot, as they scored four unanswered goals in the first 17 minutes of regulation to take a 4-0 lead on Christopher Newport. But, the Captains came back over the rest of the half, tallying four of the next five goals to slice the Scranton lead down to 5-4 entering intermission.

But, out of the break for halftime, Scranton slammed the door on Christopher Newport for the day, holding the Captains scoreless for 12 minutes, while scoring eight straight times to take an insurmountable 13-4 lead with 18:07 left in regulation.

CNU went on to score the two of the last three goals of the game, but it was too little, too late for the Captains, as Scranton rolled to their two road win of the year by eight goals.

Overall on the day, senior Gallo once again led the offense, as she recorded her third hat trick of the year in the win.

Meanwhile, five different Royals scored two goals, apiece, in the win - freshman Halle Conklin (Point Lookout, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial), junior Shannon Warburton (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh), sophomore Jill Henson (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy), junior Kate Calabro (Seaford, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial), and senior Christine Olert (Katonah, N.Y./Somers). Henson also had four assists in the win, as well.

Elsewhere, sophomore Halle Conklin (Point Lookout, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) scored a goal and dished out three assists and freshman Jaclyn McCusker (River Edge, N.J./River Dell) had an assist to round out the offensive superlatives on the day for Scranton.

Calabro and junior Becca Russo (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) once again kickstarted the attack with six draw controls, apiece, and in the ground ball category, Calabro, Henson and senior Cait Kollar (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) all had four ground balls, each, in the win.

It was another strong day for the Royals defense in the victory, as the unit caused 17 turnovers, led by Conklin and Calabro, who forced four turnovers, apiece. In net, sophomore Lauren Devlin (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) had a big day, making 14 saves on 20 shots faced to record her first win of the season.

The University of Scranton women's lacrosse team returns to action on Wednesday, as they return home to Weiss Field to take on cross-town rival Marywood. Things get underway at 7 p.m.
