SCRANTON, Pa. - In their final match before starting Landmark Conference play this weekend, The University of Scranton women's lacrosse team made quick work of visiting Marywood on Wednesday night, taking a 15-3 win at Weiss Field.
With the victory, the Royals, who are ranked 20th nationally by the IWLCA, moved to 6-1 overall for the year, while Marywood dropped to 3-3 overall with the loss.
In the win, Scranton scored early and often to pull away from Marywood, as the Royals opened a 10-1 lead with 8:18 left in the first half after scoring eight straight goals. Marywood scored a goal at the end of the half, but Scranton finished the period off with a score, making it an 11-2 game entering intermission.
It was more of the same in the second half, as the Royals increased their lead to 15-2 with 19 minutes to go in regulation. From there, Scranton coasted down the stretch, as they rolled to a 12-goal victory after Marywood scored the final tally of the night with nine minutes left in regulation.
Overall in the win for Scranton, junior Shannon Warburton (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) led the offense, scoring four goals on the evening for the Royals. Sophomores Raegen Dunn (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) and Jill Henson (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) had two goals and two assists, apiece, as well.
Other goal scorers on the night for Scranton were freshman Jennifer Williams (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville), sophomore Bridget Doyle (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley), freshman Halle Conklin (Point Lookout, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial), junior Kate Calabro (Seaford, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial), senior Elena Gallo (East Meadow, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial), senior Christine Olert (Katonah, N.Y./Somers) and sophomore Mary Kate Horton (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock).
On the defensive end in the win, it was another strong night for the Royals, as they allowed just three goals and forced Marywood to make 20 turnovers. Leading the way was junior Becca Russo (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor), who finished with five caused turnovers, five ground balls and four draw controls. Calabro also led the Royals in draw controls in the win, finishing with six.
In net, sophomore Lauren Devlin (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) and junior Erin Putnam (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) split time in the win, with Devlin making three saves in the first half and Putnam making five stops in the second.
The University of Scranton women's lacrosse team returns to action on Saturday, as they take on Susquehanna in their Landmark Conference season opener at Weiss Field. Action gets underway at 1 p.m.
