After leading a dominating University of Scranton women's lacrosse defensive unit all week, freshman Emily Schum (East Hanover, N.J./Morris Catholic) of the Royals was named the Landmark Conference's Defensive Athlete of the Week on Monday for the period ending March 31, 2019.

Schum, who earns the Defensive Athlete of the Week award for the first time, helped the 20th-ranked Royals improve to 9-1 overall after controlling victories over Farmingdale State on Wednesday (16-4) and Juanita on Saturday (17-3) this past week.

First, against Farmingdale State, Schum led the way with six caused turnovers, while also scooping up a season-best seven ground balls in a 12-goal win for the Royals at home. It was more of the same for the freshman at Juniata on Saturday, as she finished with three ground balls and a caused turnover in another double-digit win for the Royals.

Schum and the rest of the Royals defense this week continued to play at a high level, as they've now held five straight opponents to single-digit goals, accomplishing the feat seven times in 10 matches for the year. Allowing just 6.1 goals a game, Scranton is 10th nationally in scoring defense, while causing 15 turnovers a game, which ranks 16th in Division III.

Schum and the rest of The University of Scranton women's lacrosse team returns to action on Tuesday, as they travel to Rowan for a non-conference road match beginning at 7 p.m.
