GLASSBORO, N.J. – After being held to just one goal in the first half of Tuesday night's non-conference women's lacrosse game at Rowan, The University of Scranton outscored the Profs 10-5 in the second half to rally for a thrilling, 11-10 victory.
The Royals, who are currently ranked 20th in the county, improve to 10-1 on the season with their sixth-straight win. Scranton has now reached double-figures for victories in four consecutive seasons and accomplished the feat for the 12th time in the program's 20th season of competition.
Senior Christine Olert (Katonah, N.Y./Somers), junior Kate Calabro (Seaford, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial), and freshman Halle Conklin (Point Lookout, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) scored three goals apiece to lead the Royals to the comeback victory.
Junior goalkeeper Erin Putnam (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks South) made nine saves in the second half to post her fifth victory of the season. Her final save of the evening, which came with 2:21 left in regulations and with the Royals leading 11-9, was the 300th of her career. The milestone stop lifted Putnam into sole possession of fourth place in Scranton history for career saves.
Rowan (5-4) scored the first five goals of Tuesday's contest before Olert got Scranton on the board with just 1:04 remaining in the first half.
After trailing by four goals at halftime, the Royals chipped away at the Profs' lead and cut it to a single goal on three occasions before tying the contest at 9-9 with 7:52 remaining in regulation on an unassisted goal by Henson.
Henson's tally was the third of a four-goal run by the visitors that saw Scranton flip a 9-8 deficit into an 11-9 lead. Conklin gave the Royals their first lead of the night with 5:43 left on the clock before adding a much-needed insurance goal with 4:27 remaining.
Rowan pulled back to within a goal, 11-10, with 2:12 left and won the ensuing draw, but junior Becca Russo (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) caused a turnover and picked up the ensuing groundball to help the Royals seal the victory.
Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Devlin (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) turned aside seven shots in the opening 30 minutes of play.
Russo tied for a game-high with seven groundballs while Calabro scooped up five groundballs and tied for a game-high with four caused turnovers. Conklin led the Royals with three draw controls on the evening.
The Profs held a slim, 32-30 edge in shots for the game and had a 16-9 lead in draw controls while the Royals had the advantage in groundballs, 31-25 and forced Rowan into 22 turnovers while committing 15 turnovers of their own.
Scranton will resume Landmark Conference play on Saturday at Goucher. Opening draw between the Royals and Gophers is set for 1 p.m. in Towson, Md.
