Junior Becca Russo (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) of The University of Scranton women's lacrosse team was named the Landmark Conference's Defensive Athlete of the Week on Monday for the period ending Apr. 20, 2019, marking the second time on the season the junior has won the award.
Last week, Russo led the Royals defense in a convincing 19-8 win at Elizabethtown that pushed Scranton's record for the season to 13-2 overall and 5-1 in the Landmark Conference.
In the win, Russo led the way with four ground balls and three caused turnovers, as the Scranton defense held an opponent to single-digit goals for the 10th time on the season. Russo also kickstarted the offense with seven draw controls, which also led the Royals on the day in the win.
For the season, Russo continues to lead the team in ground balls (56) and caused turnovers (32), while coming in second on the squad in draw controls with 58.
Entering the final week of the regular season, Russo leads the Landmark Conference in ground balls and is third in caused turnovers, as the Royals defense is allowing just 7.3 goals a game, the 22nd best mark in all of NCAA Division III.
Scranton, who moved up two spots to 18th in this week's IWLCA NCAA Division III Top 25 Poll, returns to action on Tuesday, as they take on Cabrini in a non-conference road game. Action gets underway at 7 p.m.
