The No. 20 University of Scranton women's lacrosse team was selected second in the Landmark Conference preseason poll that was announced by the conference office on Tuesday morning.

The Royals tallied 50 points to finish second in the poll. Catholic topped the poll with 60 points, while Drew and Moravian received 36 points apiece to round out the top four.

Elizabethtown placed fifth in the poll with 25 points and was followed by Susquehanna (21 points), Goucher (11 points) and Juniata (6 points).

Scranton is coming off a historic 2019 season that saw them post a 16-3 record and advance to the Landmark Conference Championship game before falling just short against Catholic. The Royals were ranked in the IWLCA Top 25 for much of the season and finished the season ranked for the first time in program history.

Head coach Chrissy Trescavage's squad returns five of their top seven scorers from a year ago including junior attacker Jill Henson (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) who led the team with 48 goals and 34 assists in 2019. Scranton brings back five players that earned All-Conference and All-Region honors last season in Henson, senior midfielder Kate Calabro (Seaford, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial), senior defender Becca Russo (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor), sophomore midfielder Halle Conklin (Point Lookout, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) and sophomore defender Emily Schum (East Hanover, N.J./Morris Catholic).

Russo garnered an IWLCA Second Team All-American honors after leading the Landmark Conference in ground balls (74) and ranking second in caused turnovers (41). She also ranked seventh in the conference with 79 draw controls.

The Royals open the 2020 season at Messiah on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 1 p.m with the home opener slated for Saturday, Feb. 29 at 1 p.m. vs. Kean. Landmark Conference play will begin on Saturday, March 28 when Scranton hosts Juniata.
