WESTMINSTER, Md. – Junior Daniel D'Agostini (Allentown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) won all three of his matches to help The University of Scranton wrestling team go 2-1 at the Green Terror Duals on Sunday at McDaniel College.
The Royals (5-2) opened the day with a 28-15 loss to Gettysburg, but rebounded to beat Alderson Broaduss, 30-14, and McDaniel, 33-9.
D'Agostini was perfect on the day, posting a pair of decisions and adding a victory by forfeit, all at 184 pounds. He was the lone Royal to go 3-0 on the day.
Gettysburg 28, Scranton 15
The Bullets opened the match with back-to-back pins, followed by back-to-back major decisions to race out to a 20-0 lead after four matches. Sophomore John Sheedy (Somerset, N.J./Bishop George Ahr H.S.) got the Royals on the board at 157 with an 8-4 decision, but the Bullets followed with a major decision at 165 for a 24-3 lead, meaning Scranton needed to win the final four matches, and the Royals nearly pulled it off.
Senior Zachary D'Apolito (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley Senior) picked up a 6-4 decision at 174, and D'Agostini followed with a forfeit win to cut the deficit to 24-12. Sophomore Keegan Connelly (Schnecksville, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) followed with a 7-3 decision at 197, but it left the Royals down by nine with one match left, which they lost at heavyweight.
Scranton 30, Alderson Broaddus 14
The Royals won three of the first four matches to take control. Senior Nicholas DePierro (Manalapan, N.J./Freehold Township) started the match with a 10-9 decision at 125. After the Royals dropped a technical fall at 133, sophomore Nicholas Ciaccia (Freehold, N.J./Howell) and freshman William Laughlin (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) posted back-to-back pins at 141 and 149 for a 15-5 lead.
After there was no contest at 157, junior Kevin Merle (Stroudsburg, Pa./Belvidere) won by pin at 165 for a 21-5 lead. D'Agostini then clinched the victory with a 12-5 decision at 184. Freshman William Oxley (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) put the exclamation point on the win with a pin at heavyweight.
Scranton 33, McDaniel 9
After dropping the first two matches, Scranton rolled off 33 straight points to end the way with a win. Oxley had a pin at heavyweight, as did sophomore T.J. Conlon (Long Branch, N.J./Long Branch) at 149. Merle posted a third-period technical fall at 165, Sheedy won by major decision at 157, and Ciaccia (141), D'Apolito (174), D'Agostini (184) and Connelly (197) all won by decision.
The wrestling team will be back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 29, when the Royals host East Stroudsburg at 7 p.m. in the Long Center.
