Freshman William Oxley (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy), sophomore Keegan Connelly (Schnecksville, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) and junior Daniel D'Agostini (Allentown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) swept the final three bouts of the night to lift The University of Scranton wrestling team out of a one-point deficit to a 21-16 win over East Stroudsburg in the Long Center on Wednesday night.
Scranton (6-2) faced a 16-12 deficit with three matches left, but D'Agostini started the comeback with 7-2 decision at 184 pounds. Connelly then took the mat at 197 pounds and muscled out an 11-5 decision to put the Royals ahead, 18-16. But that meant the match would come down to 285, where Oxley took the mat against East Stroudsburg's Hunter Marhan.
After a scoreless first period, Marhan chose to start the second down and Oxley made him pay. The freshman controlled his opponent for the first minute of the period, then turned him to pick up four back points for a 4-0 lead. From there, Oxley kept Marhan on the defensive most of the way while posting a 7-4 decision to clinch the win for Scranton.
The Royals also received a clutch pin at 141 pounds from sophomore Nicholas Ciaccia (Freehold, N.J./Howell). His pin at 6:08 gave Scranton its first lead at 9-6 after senior Nicholas DePierro (Manalapan, N.J./Freehold Township) had picked up an 8-5 decision at 133 pounds for Scranton's first three points.
Sophomore John Sheedy (Somerset, N.J./Bishop George Ahr H.S.) also gave the Royals a decision with an 11-6 win at 157 pounds for a 12-9 lead before the Warriors (0-2) followed with a decision and a major decision for the 16-12 lead before the Royals rallied.
The wrestling team will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 2, when the Royals travel to Rochester, N.Y. to compete in the RIT Invitational beginning at 9 a.m.
