The University of Scranton wrestling team will open its 2018-19 this Saturday when the Royals compete in the Ned McGinley Invitational at King's College in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
The Royals are coming off a 2018-19 season in which they went 10-4 in dual meet competition and had one invitational win, the Jim Crytzer Memorial at Washington & Lee. Last season, the Royals placed eighth at the Ned McGinley Invitational to open the season.
Head coach Al Russomano welcomes back four wrestlers who won at least 15 bouts last season. Senior Daniel D'Agostini (Allentown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) heads that group after going 25-8 last season. A 197-pounder, he enters his senior season with 69 career victories, tied for seventh-most in program history.
Junior Keegan Connelly (Schnecksville, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) is back at 285 pounds after going 23-13 last season, moving up to 285 from 197 midway through the season. Junior John Sheedy (Somerset, N.J./Bishop George Ahr) is back at 165 after going 21-8 at 157 pounds last year, and senior Kevin Merle (Stroudsburg, Pa./Belvidere) is back at 165 pounds after posting a 19-10 record last season.
The Royals will open their home schedule on Sunday, Nov. 11, when they host the Electric City Duals beginning at 10 a.m. in the Long Center. Scranton will also host home dual meets against Elizabethtown on Jan. 8 and Lycoming on Feb. 3.
