Junior Keegan Connelly (Schnecksville, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) of The University of Scranton wrestling team won four of his five matches at 86th Annual Wilkes Open and moved into the top-10 in program history for career wins in the process. As a result of his performance, he has been named The University of Scranton Athlete of the Week.
Connelly won four of his five matches at the Wilkes Open, which featured some of the top programs in the region from all three NCAA divisions. His performance helped the Royals to a 15th place finish out of 34 teams with just three wrestlers competing for Scranton.
At the Wilkes Open, Connelly recorded a pin, a technical fall, and two decisions to finish fifth. He began his day with a 20-3 technical fall win over Adam Krieger of Mount Saint Vincent before being edged out but Christian Colucci of Rutgers in a 4-1 decision.
Connelly came back strong with three consecutive wins to claim fifth place. He began the run with a 5-1 decision over Rhode Island's Jordan Zanni before pinning Esposito Alexander of Rutgers at the 4:53 mark. In the fifth place match, Connelly posted a 3-1 decision over Antonio Pelusi of Franklin & Marshall.
For the season, Connelly now sports a 19-6 record and is 67-32 for his career, ranking 10th in program history for career victories.
Connelly has now twice been named The University of Scranton Athlete of the Week having also earned the honor during his freshman campaign.
Connelly and the Royals return to the mat on Tuesday evening when they host Elizabethtown in a dual meet starting at 7 p.m. in the Long Center.
