WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The University of Scranton wrestling team won two of its three meets on Sunday at the John Reese Duals hosted by Wilkes University. The Royals (7-6) bounced back from a 37-10 setback to No. 21 RIT in Sunday's opener to defeat Keystone (52-3) and Penn State Behrend (40-9).
Match 1 vs. RIT
In Sunday's opening match against nationally-ranked RIT, the Tigers (9-1) took an 11-0 lead with wins in the first three bouts before Conlon posted a 20-6 major decision at 149 pounds to give Scranton its first four points of the competition.
RIT won the next four weight classes before D'Agostini pinned his opponent at 197 pounds. The pin was D'Agostini's fourth of the season and 17th of his career.
The Tigers closed out the match with a win at 285 pounds.
Match 2 vs. Keystone
Scranton bounced back for a dominating victory over Keystone (4-17) in the second round of the competition, winning three of the four contested matches while taking advantage of six forfeits by the Giants.
Conlon notched his second win of the day at 149 pounds with a pin at the 6:23 mark, his second fall of the season and ninth of his career. Connelly posted a pin at the 4:16 mark of the 285 pound matchup.
Merle earned a 15-5 major decision at 165 pounds for the Royals' third win in contested bouts against the Giants, whose lone points came on a decision at 141 pounds.
Match 3 vs. Penn State Behrend
In Sunday's finale against the Lions (3-13), Scranton won eight of the 10 bouts to post their second win of the day.
Penn State Behrend opened the match with a decision at 125 pounds, but the Royals won the next six weight classes to take control of the competition. Following forfeit wins for Scranton at 133 pounds and 141 pounds Conlon claimed his third win of the day with a 12-4 major decision at 149 pounds.
Sophomore Kyle Shaffer (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) won by decision at 157 pounds before Merle and sophomore Aidan McNally (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) scored back-to-back pins at 165 pounds and 174 pounds, respectively.
Merle's pin at 165 pounds came just 12 seconds into the bout and was the eighth of the season and 27th of the senior's career, bring him into a tie for fourth on Scranton's all-time pins list. McNally claimed his third career pin just 35 seconds into the 174 pound match against the Lions.
D'Agostini picked up his third victory over the day with a 10-4 decision at 197 pounds before Connelly claimed his second win via the pin at the 1:32 mark of the 285 pound bout. Connelly's pin was his fifth of the season pin of the year and 13th of his career.
With his three wins, D'Agostini lifted his career total to 98, fourth-best in Scranton history. He is now 29-2 on the season, tied for the eighth most wins in a year.
Connelly is now 27-7 on the year and 74-34 for his career, tied for the 11th most wins in a season while sitting seventh for career wins.
In exhibition action, freshman John Murphy (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) pinned Keystone's Nick Hannon in 4:41.
Scranton will return home next Sunday to take on Lycoming in a dual meet starting at 12:30 p.m. in the John Long Center.
