WILLIAMSPORT - It was a solid day for The University of Scranton wrestling team on Saturday at the Penn Tech Duals, as the Royals knocked off two opponents, besting the host Penn Tech (22-15), York (Pa.) (25-16), before dropping a tough decision to Washington & Lee (22-18).
With the two victories, Scranton is now 9-2 in dual bouts on the young season.
First up on the day was Penn Tech, and in the win, sophomore Matthew Murawski (Harrington Park, N.J./Northern Valley - Old Tappan) won by decision at 125 points (9-6), and freshman Anthony Clarizio (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) picked up the first pin of the day for the Royals in 50 seconds at 141 pounds.
The next win for the Royals was at 157 points, where junior Kyle Shaffer (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) was a 3-1 winner in a match that put Scranton up, 12-6 overall. Later on, Scranton got back-to-back wins at 174 by junior William Laughlin (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) (10-4) and sophomore Aidan McNally (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) at 184 (15-6) that put Scranton up, 19-11 in the match.
But, Penn Tech collected a win at 197 pounds to cut the Scranton lead down to 19-15 entering 285 pounds, where senior Keegan Connelly (Schnecksville, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) remained unbeaten on the year with a 6-0 win to give the Royals a seven-point victory.
In a nine-point win over York, Murawski (3-0) and Clarizio (another pin, this time in 50 seconds) were winners at their weight classes, while senior T.J. Conlon (Long Branch, N.J./Long Branch) captured a 4-0 win at 167 pounds. From there, the trio of Laughlin (pin at 4:51), McNally (15-7) and Connelly (3-2) all won at their respective weight classes to seal the win for Scranton.
The Royals' closest match of the day was against Washington & Lee, where they fell just short on a win despite several outstanding individual efforts.
Taking wins in the Washington & Lee match was Murawski by a slim 5-4 decision at 125, which was the same total Clarizio was victorious in as the pair finished off the afternoon with 3-0 records. Shaffer collected a win for the Royals in his weight class by pinfall (5:54), and Laughlin finished his day off unbeaten with an 8-3 win at 174.
At 285, Connelly continued his banner season to date for the Royals with a convincing 10-4 victory, as the senior is now 11-0 in competition for the year for Scranton.
