Connelly, Oakes Take Three Bouts on Day to Lead Wrestling at North-South Duals

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - Senior Keegan Connelly (Schnecksville, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) and freshman Jeremiah Oakes (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) won three bouts, apiece, in their respective weight classes. to lead The University of Scranton wrestling team at the 2020 North-South Duals held at Ursinus.

On the day, Scranton knocked off Rhode Island College in a dual, 22-19, but fell to host Ursinus (30-15), WPI (26-19), and Shippensburg (26-16). With the results, the Royals are now 11-5 in dual matches on the year.

Here are some highlights on the day for Scranton.

  • After dropping his first bout of the day to Shippensburg's Derek Berberick, 8-3, Connelly came back strong the rest of the afternoon. Against Rhode Island College, he clinched the victory with a win via pinfall, then collected a 7-3 win over WPI. He then collected another pinfall win over Ursinus to round out the afternoon.

  • Elsewhere on the day, Oakes collected victories at 165 pounds against Shippensburg (4-2), a major against Rhode Island College (10-1) and another decision vs. Ursinus (8-1) to also go 3-1 overall. 

  • Junior Aidan McNally (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) also had a big day for Scranton at 184 pounds. First, he won his bout at 184 pounds against Shippensburg by major decision, 12-3, then collected a 16-2 major win over Rhode Island College. 

  • Elsewhere in the victory over Rhode Island College, sophomore Matthew Murawski (Harrington Park, N.J./Northern Valley - Old Tappan) blanked his opponent at 125 pounds, 15-0, while at 157 pounds, junior Kyle Shaffer (Mahwah, N.J/Mahwah) won a thriller by a 1-0 decision. 

  • Freshman Anthony Clarizio (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) rounded out the top performances on the day for the Royals, as he won twice at 141 pounds, taking pinfall victories over WPI and Ursinus

The University of Scranton wrestling team returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 18, when they travel back to Ursinus for the Will Abele Invitational. Action gets underway at 9:30 a.m.
