Wrestling’s Clarizio Nabs Scranton Athlete of the Week Honors for First Time

Freshman Anthony Clarizio (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) of The University of Scranton wrestling team was named the Scranton Athlete of the Week for the first time in his career on Tuesday.

On Saturday, Clarizio was impressive in his weight class at the Will Abele Invitational held at Ursinus, as he captured the 141-pound title after rolling through five opponents on the afternoon.

In the event, two of Clarizio's victories were by pinfall and one was by technical fall. He won his final two bouts of the day by fall, beating TCNJ's Nic Mele (1:50) in the 141 semifinals and Robert Dinger (1:32) in the finals. Dinger entered the day as the number one seed at 141 and was nationally ranked.

Earlier in the afternoon, Clarizio rolled past Verlensky Joachim of York by tech. fall, 17-0, in the first round, then got past Steven Schwab of TCNJ by decision (5-4) in the second round.

For the 2019-20 season, Clarizio is now 24-5 overall for the year in his first season at Scranton, as 13 of those victories have come by pinfall.

Clarizio and the rest of The University of Scranton wrestling team returns to action this evening, hosting Elizabethtown in the John Long Center. Action gets underway at 7 p.m.
