Day One Results

ITHACA, N.Y. - Freshman Anthony Clarizio (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) and senior Keegan Connelly (Schnecksville, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) moved into the semifinals of their respective weight classes on the day, leading The University of Scranton wrestling team on the opening day of the 2020 NCAA Mideast Regionals held at Ithaca College.

Overall, the Royals collected 39.5 points as a team on the day to put themselves in ninth place entering the final day of competition Sunday. Here are some highlights from the day in Ithaca.

  • At 141 pounds, Clarizio kicked the day off with his 18th win via pinfall on the 2019-20 season over Kian Pacheco of Oswego. In the second round, the freshman rolled to a 7-0 decision over Tito Colom of Ithaca to punch his ticket to Saturday's semifinals.

  • For Clarizio, he now sits one pinfall win away from tying the school record for most pinfall victories in a season, which is now held by Michael Granchamp (19 in 1998-99).

  • At 285 pounds, Connelly pushed his record on the year to 33-3 with two victories by decision. First, he knocked off Jayvon Davidson of Centenary, 8-2, then in the second round, he blanked Mitch Down of Pitt-Bradford, 3-0, to head to tomorrow's semifinals.

  • With the victories, Connelly is now 117-39 for his career, as he is firmly in third place on the all-time career victories list.

  • At 125, sophomore Matthew Murawski (Harrington Park, N.J./Northern Valley - Old Tappan) got a first-round bye but dropped his second round match-up to Logan Ninos of Ithaca, 8-2. Murawski, however, bounced back with a 9-2 win in the consolation bracket over Mikey Smith of Oneonta.

  • In the 174 pound bracket, junior William Laughlin (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) was victorious in the first round over Michel McCabe of Ithaca by major decision, 11-3. After losing in the second round to Daniel Kilroy of TCNJ by pinfall (2:37), Laughlin rebounded with a pinfall win (0:43) over Daniel Bergeron of Penn Tech.
