Sophomore forward Samantha Wargo (Kings Park, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and freshman midfielder Brittany Uricchio (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) scored two goals each as The University of Scranton women's soccer team defeated Alfred, 6-0, on Sunday afternoon in the second day of the Joe Bochicchio Classic at Fitzpatrick Field.
Scranton (2-2-1) also received goals from junior forward Kelly Egan (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex Senior) and sophomore midfielder Hannah DeMars (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) in the victory. Freshman forward Erica Licari (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown East) and freshman midfielder Taylor Stevens (Yardley, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) had two assists apiece for the Royals.
Egan wasted little time putting Scranton ahead, scoring in the third minute from just inside 20 yards out when she took a pass from sophomore defender Katie Cullen (Malvern, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) and fired a shot that hit the bottom of the crossbar and crossed the goal line. It was Egan's first goal of the season and fifth of her career, while Cullen picked up her first assist of 2015 and second of her career.
DeMars showed her scoring prowess in the 12th minute when she ripped a shot from almost 20 yards out that snuck over the Alfred goalkeeper's extended arm and just under the cross bar for a 2-0 lead. It was her first career goal. Senior forward Gianna Vitolo (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls) picked up her second assist of the season and 13th of her career on the play.
Uricchio scored her first career goal in the 27th minute when she finished in close on a perfect cross by Licari.
And Wargo made it 4-0 at the half when she scored in the 35th minute when she beat the goalkeeper to the low left side after a perfect through ball Stevens.
Uricchio added her second career goal in the 52nd minute when she converted after Stevens' corner kick slipped through the defense. And Wargo completed the scoring less than a minute later when she converted on another perfect cross by Licari.
The Royals enjoyed an 18-2 advantage in shots and 6-0 in corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Kristen McShane (Cherry Hills, N.J./Paul VI) worked the first 52:49 in goal and junior Danielle Maurice (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. Anthony's) went the rest of the way to complete the shutout.
Scranton will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 16, when the Royals host Marywood at 7 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field.
