Senior defender Jasmine Sconciafurno (Woodland Park, N.J./Passaic Valley) celebrated a birthday over the weekend by helping The University of Scranton women's soccer team put forth a pair of strong defensive efforts. As a result, Sconciafurno has been named the Landmark Conference Defensive Athlete of the Week.
Sconciafurno was the anchor of a Scranton defense that allowed one goal in two matches over the weekend. Her work along the backline helped limit Lebanon Valley to six shots in a 1-0 loss on Saturday at Fitzpatrick Field. A day later, she was a key reason why the Royals allowed just two late shots, neither on goal, in a 6-0 win over Alfred at Fitzpatrick Field.
A first-team all-conference selection last season and a second-team choice in 2013, this is the first time Sconciafurno has been named Landmark Conference Defensive Athlete of the Week. Her selection marks the second straight week the Royals have picked up the award, as junior goalkeeper Krissy Welsh (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) was honored last week.
The Royals are back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 16, when they host Marywood at 7 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field.
