DALLAS, Pa. – Sophomore midfielder Jamie Hreniuk (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) scored in the 37th minute and senior goalkeeper Krissy Welsh (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) made a career-high 12 saves as The University of Scranton women's soccer team posted a 1-0 road victory over 25th-ranked Misericordia on Wednesday evening.
Hreniuk came through for the Royals (9-1-1) when she broke free against the Misericordia goalkeeper and slotted a shot into the left corner for the only tally of the night. It was her team-leading seventh goal of the season and her second game-winner.
Scranton won despite being outshot, 29-7, by Misericordia (8-3), but senior Welsh made those career-high 12 saves, including nine in the second half. The clean sheet was her fifth of the season and 21st of her career, which is tied for fifth on the team's all-time career list.
Welsh was helped on defense by the backline of seniors Erin Casey (Hatfield, Pa./Gwynedd Mercy Academy) and Carolyn Warner (Morris Plains, N.J./Parsippany Hills), junior Katie Cullen (Malverne, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) and freshman Becca Russo (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor). The defensive unit as a whole posted its fourth straight shutout and eighth of the season.
Hreniuk's goal was just one of two shots on goal for Scranton, which also had one corner kick to seven for the Cougars. Hreniuk and fellow sophomore midfielder Taylor Stevens (Yardley, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) both had two shots to lead the team.
Scranton will be back in action on Saturday when the Royals travel to Selinsgrove, Pa. to take on Susquehanna in a Landmark Conference match beginning at 1 p.m.
