Senior goalkeeper Krissy Welsh (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) had maybe the best game of her career in The University of Scranton women's soccer team's win over nationally ranked Misericordia last week.
As a result, Welsh has been named the Landmark Conference Defensive Athlete of the Week.
Welsh made 12 saves as the Royals (10-1-1, 3-0-0 Landmark) knocked off the 25th-ranked Cougars, 1-0, on the road on Wednesday, Oct. 4. Nine of those saves came in the second half as the defense made the game's only goal in the 37th minute stand up for the team's fourth straight shutout and eighth of the season.
For Welsh, it was her fifth clean sheet of the season and the 21st of her career, which ranks fifth on the team's all-time career list. The 12 saves surpassed her previous career high of 10, which she achieved twice previously.
Welsh also made a pair of saves in a 3-2 overtime win at Susquehanna on Saturday that extended the Royals' winning streak to seven and put them alone in first place in the Landmark Conference.
The women's soccer team will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 12, when the Royals host Drew in a Landmark Conference matchup at 7 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field.
