Junior Hannah DeMars (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) played a key role in a pair of wins by The University of Scranton women's soccer team, helping the Royals clinch the top seed in the Landmark Conference playoffs in the process.
As a result, DeMars has been named The University of Scranton Athlete of the Week.
DeMars scored a pair of goals in the Royals' 6-0 win over Goucher on Senior Day on Saturday at Fitzpatrick Field. She kicked things off with a header in the sixth minute, then scored again on a header in the 29th minute for a 3-0 lead. The two goals give her seven on the season, tied for second on the team and tied for fourth in the Landmark Conference.
Three days earlier, DeMars helped Scranton withstand an early push by Penn State-Berks before settling down and controlling the action for most of the night in a 3-0 win. The shutout was impressive for two reasons – it came against a Nittany Lions offense that averaged 6.3 goals per match coming into the game, and it snapped their 11-match unbeaten streak.
DeMars now has career highs in goals (seven) and points (15) while collecting her first two match-winning goals of her career. She has helped the Royals win 12 straight and post 12 shutouts this season, the sixth-most in a single season in program history.
The Royals will wrap up regular season play on Saturday, Oct. 29, when they travel to Washington, D.C. to take on Catholic at 1 p.m.
