ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The University of Scranton women's soccer team scored three goals in a 14-minute span to turn a scoreless match into a big victory as the Royals defeated Elizabethtown, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon.
Scranton (6-2-2, 2-0 Landmark) received goals from freshman forward Mazie Stiles (Nyack, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) and juniors Erica Licari (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown East) and Jamie Hreniuk (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) in the victory.
The Royals also received a huge effort in goal by junior goalkeeper Colleen Berry (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood), who finished with three saves and extended her scoreless streak to 524:37 before Elizabethtown (5-3-1, 1-1 Landmark) scored with 16 seconds left in the match.
With Scranton leading 1-0 after Stiles' first career goal at the 68:08 mark, Elizabethtown immediately put on pressure and received a penalty kick after a handball in the box just 26 seconds later. But Berry saved the try and the Royals went right down to the other end and doubled their lead on Licari's third goal of the season at the 70:47 mark.
Hreniuk put the game away in the 82nd minute with her seventh goal of the season and 20th of her career. She also had an assist on the goal by Stiles, giving her 15 points on the season and 44 for her career.
Junior forward Annelise DePaulo (Roseto, Pa./Moravian Academy) also picked up her first career assist when she set up Licari on her goal.
Scranton, which has now beaten Elizabethtown in their last five meetings, held a 13-10 advantage in shots and an 8-1 edge in corner kicks. Hreniuk finished with a team-high five shots for the Royals.
The women's soccer team will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 7, when the Royals host Susquehanna in a Landmark Conference matchup at 1 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field.
