Juniors Taylor Stevens (Yardley, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) and Colleen Berry (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) led the way as The University of Scranton women's soccer team posted a key victory over the weekend. As a result, the duo has earned the Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week awards for women's soccer.
Stevens was named Offensive Athlete of the Week after she had a goal and an assist in the 3-0 victory over Susquehanna at Fitzpatrick Field on Saturday. Berry earned the Defensive Athlete of the Week honor for making five saves in the match, earning her seventh shutout of the season.
The win was a key one for Scranton, which entered the match tied for first in the Landmark Conference with both Susquehanna and Juniata. The win, coupled with a Juniata loss, gave the Royals sole possession of first place. Scranton also entered the game ranked fifth in the United Soccer Coaches' Mid-Atlantic Region rankings, one spot ahead of Susquehanna.
Stevens broke the ice with a goal in the 16th minute. After the Royals held that 1-0 lead into halftime, she delivered a perfect corner kick for an assist on a goal by junior Jamie Hreniuk (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) in the 60th minute that doubled Scranton's lead.
Berry preserved the shutout with four first-half saves and one more in the second half. She has allowed just one goal in the last six matches.
The women's soccer team is back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 11, when the Royals travel to Madison, N.J. for a Landmark Conference match against Drew at 7 p.m.
