READING, Pa. – The University of Scranton women's soccer team fell behind early and could not rally in an eventual 3-1 loss on the road against Penn State-Berks on Wednesday night.
Senior midfielder Meredith D'Angelo (Hatboro, Pa./Gwynedd Mercy Academy) scored Scranton's lone goal in the 84th minute when she sent a long shot over the keeper's outstretched arm into the upper corner of the goal. The goal was the first of the season for D'Angelo and second of her career. Junior midfielder Brittany Uricchio (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) picked up her third assist of the season and sixth of her career on the play.
The Lions (10-5-1) scored in the fifth minute and again in the 29th to take a 2-0 lead into halftime. A goal in the 68th minute closed the Penn State scoring as the Royals (11-3-2) had a six-game winning streak and an 11-game unbeaten streak snapped.
Scranton held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks, but was outshot, 18-9. D'Angelo, senior defender Hannah DeMars (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) and junior forward Jamie Hreniuk (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) each had two shots to lead the Royals.
The women's soccer team will wrap up regular season play on Saturday, Oct. 28, when the Royals host Catholic in a Landmark Conference match at 1 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field. Prior to kickoff, the University will celebrate the team's six seniors with a Senior Day ceremony.
