Women's Soccer Trio Earns All-Region Accolades

Juniors Erica Licari (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown East) and Jamie Hreniuk (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell), and sophomore Becca Russo (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) of The University of Scranton women's soccer team have been named All-Mid-Atlantic Region by the United Soccer Coaches.

Licari was named to the First Team in the midfield while Hreniuk was named to the Second Team at forward, as was Russo at defender. Hreniuk was also a second-team choice last season while Licari and Russo picked up their first All-Region honors.

The trio helped Scranton win its second straight Landmark Conference championship and reach the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Royals finished the season with a 15-4-2 overall record.

Licari is Scranton's first first-team all-region honoree since Samantha Russo was a first-team forward in 2011. Licari finished the year with six goals and four assists for 16 points, and was a dominant force throughout the season. She scored game-winning goals in victories over Moravian (1-0, Sept. 23), at Drew (4-0, Oct. 11) and in a Landmark Conference semifinal against Elizabethtown (3-0, Nov. 1).

A first-team all-Landmark Conference selection this season, Licari has 15 goals and 15 assists for 45 points in her career. She was a second-team all-Landmark Conference choice as a sophomore.

Hreniuk becomes the 15th player in Scranton women's soccer history to earn all-region honors in multiple seasons. She led the Royals this season with 12 goals and 25 total points, including game-winning goals against Marywood (6-2, Sept. 13) and Haverford (3-0, Oct. 18).

A first-team all-Landmark Conference selection in each of the past two seasons and Co-Offensive Player of the Year as a sophomore, Hreniuk has 25 goals and four assists for 54 career points. She is the first Royal to score at least 10 goals in back-to-back seasons since Sara Suchoski reached double digits three straight seasons from 2001 to 2003.

Russo was a standout at center back for the Royals, anchoring a defense that posted 14 shutouts in 21 matches and allowed just a 0.64 goals-against average. She also helped Scranton allow just two goals in nine total matches against Landmark Conference opponents.

She was also an offensive weapon on set pieces, scoring a pair of goals, including the match-winner just three minutes into a 2-0 victory over Susquehanna in the Landmark Conference championship on Nov. 4. That goal helped Russo earn Landmark Conference championship MVP. She was also a first-team all-conference selection this season.

The all-region selections for Licari, Hreniuk and Russo brings the total number of players to earn all-region honors under the tutelage of head coach Colleen Pivirotto to 14. Hreniuk becomes the fifth player coached by Pivirotto to earn all-region honors multiple times.
