Senior midfielder Erica Licari (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown East) scored midway through the first half to lift The University of Scranton women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory in a Landmark Conference matchup against Goucher on Saturday at Weiss Field.
Licari's goal, which was her fourth of the season, came on a cross from senior midfielder Annelise DePaulo (Roseto, Pa./Moravian Academy) into the middle of the box, where Licari re-directed it into the net for the only goal of the game.
It was Licari's 19th career goal and gives her 54 career points, tied for 19th in Royals history. DePaulo recorded her second assist of the season and fifth of her career.
The Royals (8-0-1, 2-0-0 Landmark) remained unbeaten on the season, their best start to a season since 2003, when Scranton opened the season 23-0-1 before losing in the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
Saturday's match was a fairly lopsided affair, with the Royals holding a 21-2 edge in shots. Scranton hit the crossbar twice, once in each half, and the Goucher goalkeeper made a diving save on a header in the first half. Otherwise, the result easily could've featured a larger deficit. Sophomore midfielder Erin Toburen (Harleysville, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) had a team-high six shots, including one of those that smacked the crossbar.
Scranton also had a 12-3 edge in corner kicks and did not allow the Gophers (3-4-2, 0-1-1 Landmark) from recording a shot on goal.
Scranton will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 3, when the Royals host Penn State-Harrisburg in a non-conference contest at 7 p.m. at Weiss Field.
