Senior Rebecca Russo (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) led the defense and scored the game-winner for the women's soccer team on Saturday vs. Catholic and for her efforts, she was named The University of Scranton Athlete of the Week for the period ending Sept. 29, 2019 on Monday morning.
For Russo, this marks the first time in her already illustrious career as a member of the women's soccer team that she has earned Scranton Athlete of the Week accolades.
After a 3-2 win over Wilkes on Tuesday, the Royals and Catholic battled into double overtime scoreless on Saturday in the Landmark Conference opener for both schools. That was until Russo played a corner kick two minutes into the second overtime and placed a shot into the back of the net to give the Royals a 1-0 victory to push their record to 3-2-3 for the year.
The goal, which was the first of the season for Russo, was her the second game-winner of her career and the first since her sophomore season of 2017.
On the year, Russo continues to lead a strong Royals defense unit that has shutout three opponents and is allowing less than a goal a match at 0.91.
Russo and the rest of The University of Scranton women's soccer team returns to action on Wednesday, as they travel to Penn State Harrisburg for a non-conference road match. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
