TOWSON, Md, - Sophomore Grace Elliott (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) scored the game-winner in the 71st minute, as The University of Scranton women's soccer team once again rode a strong effort by their defense to take a 1-0 victory over host Goucher on Saturday in Landmark Conference action.
With the win (Scranton's fourth straight overall), the Royals moved to 5-2-3 overall and 2-0 in the Landmark Conference. Goucher fell to 4-8 and 0-2 in the Landmark with the loss.
After a defensive-minded first half that saw only four shots combined from the field for both teams (3-1 edge for the Royals), Scranton turned up the heat on the offensive end for the final 45 minutes, firing 10 shots.
In the 71st minute, the Royals finally cracked the scoreless tie, as Elliott played a pass from senior Rebecca Russo (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) and put a shot past Goucher goalie Christina Charikofsky to give Scranton a 1-0 lead. The goal for Elliott was her first of the year, while Russo also recorded the first assist of her senior campaign on the play.
The lone goal was all the Scranton defense needed to hold on the rest of the day, as the stout Royals unit did not allow Goucher to take a shot from the field in the entire period to take the one-score win. The shutout victory for the Royals was third straight overall, as Scranton has not allowed a goal in five matches on the year.
Overall, Scranton controlled the stat sheet, outshooting Goucher by a wide 13-1 margin, while holding the same 13-1 edge on corner kicks.
The University of Scranton women's soccer team returns to action on Wednesday, as they travel to Penn State Berks for a non-conference match. Things get underway at 7 p.m.
