For the sixth time in her career and the third time during the 2018-19 season, sophomore Lauren Byrne (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) of The University of Scranton women's swimming & diving team was named the Landmark Conference's women's swimming Athlete of the Week on Monday afternoon for the period ending Jan. 13.
Byrne previously won the award in back-to-back weeks earlier this season (Oct. 29 and Nov. 5) and won the award on three occasions during her 2017-18 freshman campaign.
In Scranton's first dual meet in over a month, Byrne led the Royals to a commanding 180-79 win over Elizabethtown at the Byron Center on Sunday afternoon. With the win, Scranton moved to 6-1 in dual meets on the season, as well.
In the victory, Byrne won two individual events, taking the 100-breaststroke in 1:10.41 and the 400-IM in a time of 4:48.88. Byrne dominated the competition in the 400-IM, winning the event by over 11 seconds. She also swam the third leg on Scranton's 200-medley relay team, helping the Royals finish first in 1:55.00.
Bryne and the rest of The University of Scranton women's swimming & diving team returns to action on Friday, as they travel to Misericordia for a tri-dual meet with the host Cougars and Marywood. Action gets underway at 4 p.m.
