Sophomore Emily Kelly (West Chester, Pa./B. Reed Henderson) won all five of the matches she played in last week to lead The University of Scranton women's tennis team to a pair of wins as the Royals wrapped up their Spring Break trip to Florida with a 3-1 record. For her performance, Kelly has been named the University of Scranton Athlete of the Week.
In singles competition, Kelly went 3-0 while playing all three matches at #5 singles. She rallied for a crucial, 0-6, 6-3, 10-6 win against Renssaeler on Tuesday as Scranton posted a 5-4 victory over the Engineers before winning against Roger Williams, 6-2, 6-3, in a 6-3 victory for the Royals. In a 7-2 setback to Franklin & Marshall on Thursday, Kelly was the only Scranton player to win in singles action with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph.
Kelly also went 2-0 in double play while playing at the #3 doubles flight. In the Royals' victory over Roger Williams on Wednesday, she helped Scranton to an 8-4 win at #3 doubles. Kelly then helped Scranton to a 9-8 (7-2) win at #3 doubles on Thursday against Franklin & Marshall.
For the season, Kelly sports an 8-2 record in singles matches, having competed in at least three matches at flights #3, #4, and #5. In doubles competition, she is 7-2 overall and has played three contests at all three flights.
Kelly and the Royals will open Landmark Conference play on Saturday, April 7 when they host Goucher at 1:00 p.m. on the Royal Courts.
