The University of Scranton women's tennis team cruised to a 9-0 over Marywood in its first home match of the season on Sunday at the Royal Courts. The Royals, who were competing in their first dual match in just over two weeks due to multiple postponements, had little trouble in improving their record to 2-0 on the season.
Senior Emilia Jakubek (Honesdale, Pa./Scranton Prep), sophomore Tatiana Klacko (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep), and junior Emily Kelly (West Chester, Pa./B. Reed Henderson) were two-match winners to lead Scranton past the Pacers (1-3).
Scranton jumped out to a 3-0 advantage by sweeping doubles play on Sunday. Jakubek and Klacko posted an 8-4 victory at no. 1 doubles while Kelly and junior Nastashia DeNunzio (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore) won in straight sets at the second flight.
In singles competition, Jakubek scored her second win of the day with a 6-2, 6-1 win at the top pairing while Klacko did the same with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at no. 2 singles. Kelly added her second victory of the match by topping her opponent at no. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-2.
At no. 4 singles, sophomore Lindsay Roberto (Princeton, N.J./Notre Dame) claimed a 6-2, 7-5 victory while classmate Marissa Campo (Green Lane, Pa./Christopher Dock Mennonite) topped her opponent at no. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-2. Sophomore Kristen Denniston (Hawley, Pa./Wallenpaupack) capped off the perfect day for the Royals with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph at no. 6 singles.
Scranton will be back in action on Tuesday when it travels to Wilkes for a non-conference match scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
