Junior Nastashia DeNunzio (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore) of The University of Scranton women's tennis team won all four of her matches of the weekend to lead the Royals to a pair of wins to open their conference schedule. As a result of her performance, she has been named the Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week.
This week's honor marks the third time this season that DeNunzio has been named the Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week.
In a 5-4 victory at Catholic in a rematch of last spring's Landmark Conference championship match on Saturday, DeNunzio earned a pair of key wins to lead the Royals past the Cardinals. After picking up an 8-5 win at no. 1 doubles, she posted a 6-2, 6-2 win at no. 1 singles, one of just two singles wins for Scranton on the day which proved to be enough to give the Royals the match.
DeNunzio posted two more wins on Sunday at Scranton rolled to a 9-0 win at Goucher. For the second day in a row, she helped the Royals notch an 8-5 victory at no. 1 doubles before winning her second match of the day in singles competition, 6-3, 6-1, at the top flight.
For the season, DeNunzio has a 5-5 record in singles competition and is 3-6 in doubles action. She is currently tied for 23rd all-time in Scranton history with 25 singles wins and is tied for 19th with 29 doubles victories in her career.
DeNunzio and the Royals (6-5, 2-0 Landmark) return to action on Saturday afternoon when they host Susquehanna in a Landmark Conference match starting at 1 p.m. at the Royal Courts in Scranton.
