CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa. - Junior Nastashia DeNunzio (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore) and sophomore Marissa Campo (Green Lane, Pa./Christopher Dock) won in both doubles and singles to lead the way, as the second-seeded University of Scranton women's tennis team rolled past visiting third-seed Elizabethtown on Wednesday, 5-1, in the 2019 Landmark Conference Semifinals played indoors at Birchwood Tennis Club.
With the win, Scranton improved to 11-6 overall and will play in the Landmark Conference championship match for the third straight season and the seventh time in the last eight seasons. There, the Royals will travel to top-seeded Moravian, as the Greyhounds were 5-1 victors of their own in a semifinal match with fourth-seeded Goucher today.
Elizabethtown ends their 2019 campaign with a 10-3 overall mark.
To start play for the afternoon, Scranton got off to as good of a start as they could've hoped for, as the Royals swept all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead into singles.
Finishing up first in doubles was the second flight team of junior Emily Kelly (West Chester, Pa./B. Reed Henderson) and senior Emilia Jakubek (Honesdale, Pa./Scranton Prep), who rolled to an 8-2 win. Then, at number three, senior Elyse Smilnak (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) and freshman Claire Loughlin (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Prep) rolled to an 8-1 win to put the Royals up, 2-0.
Finally, at number one doubles, the Royals completed the sweep, as DeNunzio and Campo pulled out an 8-6 win, giving Scranton a 3-0 lead in the match.
With a sizable advantage entering singles, DeNunzio made quick work of her opponent at number one, 6-2, 6-0 to put Scranton up 4-0. E-Town, however, captured a win at number three singles to make it a 4-1 match.
But, Campo clinched the win for the Royals at number four singles, as she collected a 6-2, 7-5 triumph to sew up the victory for Scranton.
The Royals will now set their sights on claiming their second straight Landmark Conference title on Saturday at Moravian, as Scranton will try to avenge a 5-4 loss to the Greyhounds at home during the regular season.
