BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Host and top-seeded Moravian took control of the match in singles, as they captured four straight contests to defeat The University of Scranton women's tennis team, 5-2, on Saturday in a match held at the Lewis Tennis Center on the campus of Lehigh University.
With the defeat, Scranton ends their 2018-19 season with an 11-7 overall mark, while Moravian improved to 19-1 with the win.
The day started off well for Scranton, as they captured two of three doubles contests to take a 2-1 lead in singles.
In the second flight, senior Emilia Jakubek (Honesdale, Pa./Scranton Prep) and junior Emily Kelly (West Chester, Pa./B. Reed Henderson) put the Royals on the board with an 8-2 win. Then, at number three, the tandem of freshman Claire Loughlin (Binghamton, N.J./Seton Catholic Prep) and senior Elyse Smilnak (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) collected an 8-5 win to put Scranton up, 2-0, in the match.
But, Moravian ended doubles on a high note with a win in the first flight to cut the Scranton lead down to 2-1 entering singles action. There, the Greyhounds won four matches in straight sets to win the match and the Landmark Conference title, denying Scranton their second straight Landmark crown in the process.
The defeat was also the final match at Scranton for Smilnak and Jakubek, who ended their careers with victories in doubles action on the day.
In their careers, the pair led Scranton to the Landmark Conference playoffs in all four years they were on campus. In 2018, the pair led the Royals to a Landmark title and a First Round win in the NCAA Tournament, as well.
