Women's Tennis Off to Dominant Start at King's Invitational

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The University of Scranton women's tennis team got off to a dominant start at the King's College Fall Invitational on Saturday as the Royals had six singles players and four doubles teams advance to the finals.

At the No. 1 singles flight, senior Nastashia DeNunzio (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore) posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory in the opening round and topped Lycoming's Hannah Summerson by a 6-0, 6-1 count in the semifinals to advance to the finals. DeNunzio will face Emily Fernandez of King's in the final on Sunday.

The Royals' Marissa Campo (Green Lane, Pa./Christopher Dock) posted a pair of straight set victories at the No. 3 singles flight including a 6-0, 6-0 decision against King's Alexis Zalutko in the semifinals. Campo is set to face Arcadia's Casey Boldt in Sunday's final.

Senior Emily Kelly (West Chester, Pa./B.Reed Henderson) posted a straight set win in the opening round at No. 4 singles and held off Lycoming's Wiliana Lundy with a 6-3, 6-4 victory in the semifinal match to set up a battle with Alex Volkov of Arcadia in the finals.

In No. 5 singles action, junior Kristen Denniston (Hawley, Pa./Wallenpaupack) took care of Arcadia's Maeghan Myers in straight sets and defeated Lauren Lamarca of King's 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals. Denniston is set to face Misericordia's Kayla Rembish in the finals on Sunday.

Freshman Lily Nowak (Freeland, Pa./Hazelton Area) got her collegiate career off to a strong start at the No. 6 singles flight with a pair of straight set wins to advance to the finals where she will face fellow freshman Addy Atkins of King's in the final on Sunday.

Junior Lindsay Roberto (Princeton, N.J./Notre Dame) also added a pair of straight set victories to advance to the finals at the no. 7 singles flight. Roberto tallied a 6-1, 6-1 victory in the opening round and defeated Marywood's Sarah Pagnanelli to advance to the finals where she will play Misericordia's Nicole Pangiochi.

The Royals saw all four doubles teams advance to Sunday's finals with DeNunzio/Campo at the No. 1 doubles flight, Kelly/junior Tatiana Klacko (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep) in No. 2 doubles, Nowak/sophomore Claire Loughlin (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) at No. 3 doubles and the duo of Roberto and Denniston rounded things out with a pair of victories in No. 4 doubles action.

Play will resume at the King's College Invitational on Sunday at 9 a.m.
