Senior Nastashia DeNunzio (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore) of The University of Scranton women's tennis team was named the 2019-20 Landmark Conference Senior Scholar Athlete for the sport on Thursday afternoon.
DeNunzio is the second women's tennis player in program history to be named the Landmark's Senior Scholar Athlete after Emily Walsh earned the award in 2016.
The Landmark Senior Scholar Athlete award was created to recognize one student-athlete from each sport who has excelled both athletically and academically. Seniors with a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher are eligible for the award.
Nominations are submitted to the conference office and are selected by a committee of Landmark, athletics directors, sports information directors, senior women administrators, and faculty athletic representatives.
DeNunzio boasts an impressive 3.74 GPA as a Biology major and will earn a degree from Scranton at the end of the month.
The Dunmore, Pa., native is a three-time member of the Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll and also enjoyed an outstanding career on the court for the Royals.
DeNunzio ranks sixth all-time in program history in doubles wins (42) and eighth in singles wins (41). She was named the 2019 Landmark Conference Player of the Year and is also a two-time All-Conference First Team selection in singles and doubles play along with being a second team selection as a freshman in 2017. DeNunzio has gone 16-5 (.762) in both Landmark Conference singles and doubles matches over the last three seasons.
As a sophomore in 2018, DeNunzio helped lead Scranton to an 8-2 victory over Catholic in the Landmark Conference championship match and the team went on to defeat Gwynedd Mercy by a score of 8-4 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Royals also appeared in the Landmark Conference title match in 2017 and 2019.
