Sophomore Caroline Banas (Dallas, Pa./Holy Redeemer) of The University of Scranton women's track & field team outjumped the competition on Saturday to win the high jump at the John Covert Classic at Lehigh University, her second victory in as many events. As a result, she has been named the University's Athlete of the Week.
Competing against a mix of competition from NCAA Division I, II and III, Banas was the lone competitor to clear 1.65 meters, which she accomplished on her first attempt. She was also the only competitor to clear 1.60 meters on the first try.
In the first season of women's track & field in Scranton history, Banas has already made waves, having also won the high jump at the River Hawks Opener at Susquehanna University back on Dec. 2, the Royals' first competition in their first season.
Banas and the women's track & field team will return to Susquehanna this weekend for the Susquehanna University Challenge beginning at 10 a.m. in Selinsgrove, Pa.
