Women’s Track & Field Enjoys Strong Showing at S.U. Challenge

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The University of Scranton women's track & field team enjoyed a strong performance on Saturday at the S.U. Challenge hosted by Susquehanna University.  

Junior Caroline Banas (Dallas, Pa./Holy Redeemer) led the Royals by winning the high jump after clearing the bar at 1.62 meters.

Scranton placed three runners in the top-eight of the 3,000 meter run led by sophomore Rachel Kerr (Dickson City, Pa./Scranton Prep), who finished fourth with a time of 11:05.32.  Sophomore Abigail Corrigan (Carbondale, Pa./Holy Cross) followed in seventh place while freshman Jessica Hoffmann (Millington, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) was eighth as all three runners recorded time ranking in the top-10 in the Landmark Conference this season.

The Royals enjoyed a fifth place finish in the 4x200 meter relay as freshman Ariana Baldwin (Far Rockaway, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial), junior Jasmin Russo (Hamden, Conn./Sacred Heart Academy), Banas, and freshman AnnMarie Onwuka (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) clocked in at 1:56.41.

In the 1 mile run, sophomore Emily de Onis (Blue Town, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) clocked in at 5:48.55, good for 17th place in the event while junior Nora Boussatta (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) claimed 17th in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:42.18.

Freshman Meghan McGonigle (Mullica Hill, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) had a top-10 Landmark Conference performance in the long jump, placing 19th with a leap of 4.55 meters.

Baldwin added a 19th place finish in the 200 meter dash after finishing in 29.12 while fellow freshman Nikki George (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls) placed 19th in the 400 meter dash after crossing the finish line in 1:07.68.

Competing in the weight throw for the first time, junior Hannah Tracy (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) recorded a top-10 Landmark Conference mark, finishing 20th overall in the competition with a toss of 11.59 meters. She also brought home a 19th place result in the shot put with a mark of 9.76 meters.

The Royals were ninth in the 4x400 meter relay as Baldwin, junior Margaret Stein (Ontario, N.Y./Wayne Central), Onwuka, and George combined for a time of 4:36.49.

Scranton will return to action next Sunday at the DuCharme Invitational starting at 10 a.m. at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa.
