Junior Caroline Banas (Dallas, Pa./Holy Redeemer) of The University of Scranton women's track & field team won the high jump competition last Wednesday at the King's Holiday Invitational with her best jump of the spring season. On Monday, she was recognized for her efforts, earning Landmark Conference Field Athlete of the Week honors.
At the two-day King's Holiday Invitational, Banas cleared the bar at 1.60 meters, her best mark this spring, to finish first out of seven jumpers in the competition.
Banas's mark was the second-best in the Landmark Conference this season, trailing only Elizabethtown's Kelli Garriott's mark of 1.63 meters set on April 11 at the Messiah Invitational.
Banas also ranks in the top-50 in the nation in the event as her height of 1.60 meters is tied for 43rd best in all of NCAA Division III.
Banas is the defending Landmark Conference champion in the high jump while also qualifying for the NCAA Championships last spring in the event.
This week's award marks the fifth time Banas has been named the Landmark Conference Field Athlete of the Week and first time this spring she has collected the honor.
Banas and the Royals will compete in the Monarch Open hosted by King's on Saturday starting at 9:30 a.m. The meet will be Scranton's final tune-up before the Landmark Conference Championships which will be held Saturday-Sunday, May 4-5, at Goucher.
